Fascia, soffit and why they matter
The fascia runs vertically along the roof edge and carries the gutter. The soffit is the underside of the overhang, between the fascia and the wall, and often holds attic vents. Together they close off the rafter ends and attic from rain, animals and insects. When the fascia goes soft, gutters loosen; when the soffit is damaged, the attic is exposed.
Why it's so common in Roswell
- Age. Many homes from the 1970s to 1990s have original wood trim that has been repainted many times and has weak spots.
- Heavy canopy. Gutters that clog quickly under oaks, poplars and pines overflow often, and the overflow runs down the fascia.
- Humidity and shade. Wood on shaded, tree-covered sides of a house dries slowly after each storm, giving rot a head start.
- Missing drip edge. Older roofs sometimes lack a drip edge, or it's too short, so water runs behind the gutter onto the board.
- Older historic homes, where built-in or wood gutters can rot the surrounding trim if they aren't kept lined and sealed.
Signs worth a closer look
- Paint peeling in a strip just below the gutter line
- Swollen, split or dark board ends, especially at corners

- Wasp nests, droppings or chewed edges at the eave
- Water stains on the siding below one spot on the roof edge
What you can do in the meantime
- Keep the gutter above it clear so overflow isn't soaking the board further.
- Never rest a ladder on soft fascia or a loose gutter. Rotted wood can break under the load.
- Photograph what you see from the ground, including any stains on the siding.
- Get it checked before the gutter pulls free, which usually means more wood to replace.
How fascia and soffit are repaired
- Remove the gutter from the damaged stretch.
- Find the edges of the rot by probing, then cut back to sound wood. Check the rafter tails behind for damage too.
- Fit new boards and soffit panels as needed, primed and sealed, including cut ends.
- Fix the drip edge so roof water lands in the gutter, not behind it.
- Re-hang the gutter on hidden hangers with the correct slope. See gutter repair.
- Test with water to confirm the new wood stays dry.

Material choices
- Primed and painted wood: matches existing trim and suits historic homes; needs regular paint upkeep.
- PVC or composite trim: resists rot and holds paint well; costs more up front.
- Aluminum wrap: covers sound wood to reduce future painting; never a cover-up for rot.
